When I’m on the clock, I need volume and BIG hair (per my lovely news director Jason Ball — who is originally from the South — and thinks the bigger the hair, the better! He literally told me one of his favorite quotes is from Dolly Parton who said, “If anyone tells you your hair is too big, get rid of them. You don’t need that kind of negativity in your life).
Getting BIG hair is not an easy task when you’re half Asian with stick straight and super fine hair. It took awhile, but I finally figured it out… and since most of the time this works for me, it will likely work for you too.
1. Spray Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray and Primer and dry hair completely with a blow-dryer.
2. Use velcro rollers (I use 2″ ones) to lift hair from the root (you could even curl the sections of hair with a curling iron before placing the rollers in for even more lift)
3. Spray with hairspray (I like L’Oreal Elnett) and let it sit (this is when I usually sit in the makeup chair and get my makeup done).
4. After 20-30 minutes, remove the rollers. Your hair should have a ton of lift!
5. Use a teasing brush and backcomb small portions of hair on the top and sides of your hair. Part and style as needed… by now you should have lots of volume.

This is what it takes to get volume (in the makeup room at KTLA with Courtney Friel)
