If you’re looking for sapphire blue water and white sandy beaches, look no further than the US Virgin Islands. My husband and I recently took a quick trip to St. Thomas, known as the gateway to the Caribbean.
While there were mostly cloudy skies and light showers for two of the three days we were there, our stay at the Ritz-Carlton was still relaxing and enjoyable. One of the best parts about the resort are the people. The staff is super nice, but it was three people in particular who made our stay extra special.
On our first night, we went to Bluewater, the Asian-inspired restaurant located on the property and we immediately bonded with the Senior FB Manager, Joe DeBlasio. After he served us a complimentary shot of sorrel, hibiscus flower, ginger, lime, and lemon, we asked for a second round, but this time, we asked if he could use the shot as a base for a cocktail. Joe came back with a beautiful red drink on the rocks and said he added tequila and muddled mint to the mix and the result was delicious. We encouraged him to put it on the main menu and call it “The Joe.”
The two main chefs on the property, Jobin Thomas and Paula Smagacz, also went above and beyond to accommodate my numerous allergies (nuts, apples, oranges, grapes, etc.) as well as my vegan dietary habits and I could not be more grateful or well fed!
We are already planning a return trip to St. Thomas at the end of the year, but next time around, we are hoping for more sunshine and will likely venture off the island to visit St. John and perhaps St. Croix.
IMPORTANT TO NOTE:
If you are planning to travel to the US Virgin Islands, make sure you fill out this form before heading to the airport (this is one of those post-pandemic rules that remains in place as of May 2022). You cannot check in your bags without prior approval and must show a QR code that’s sent to your email at the airport before your departure and after your arrival.
