Peru is a special place for me. My husband, Luis, was born in Peru, and being that I’m half-Chinese, I was super excited to learn that the biggest Chinatown in Latin America is located in Lima. Wth the influx of Chinese immigrants arriving in the late 19th century, Chifa – a mix of Chinese and Peruvian flavors – took off and today, it’s everywhere.
Trying Chifa in Lima for the first time
When you think of Peru, Machu Picchu and the Amazon probably come to mind. However, there’s so much more to discover in this vibrant country, especially within its capital city, Lima.
Known as the gastronomic capital of Latin America, Lima offers a rich tapestry of flavors and cuisines. In this post, we’ll explore a unique aspect of Lima’s food scene: Chifa, a fusion of Chinese and Peruvian cuisines.
Chinese Influence in Peru
On my first visit to Peru a few years ago, I was surprised to learn about the significant Chinese population in the country. This blend of cultures gave birth to Chifa, a delicious culinary fusion found in thousands of restaurants across Lima. Today, I’m excited to share my experience at one of the best Chifa restaurants in the city…Shinua.

Shinua, an upscale Chifa restaurant, stands out for its innovative approach, blending American and European influences with traditional Chifa cuisine. Diego Leon De Peralta, the brains behind Shinua and other high-end establishments in Lima, has created an exceptional dining experience.
The restaurant’s popularity skyrocketed after its opening in 2019, and despite a temporary closure due to the pandemic, it has made a big comeback.
Shinua offers an eclectic mix of dishes featuring ingredients like Angus beef from the States, truffle wagyu, and bao sliders. The concept of sharing plates encourages diners to sample a variety of flavors, enhancing the communal dining experience. Arnold Wu, Diego’s partner, brings his expertise to the table, ensuring that each dish is a culinary masterpiece.
The Ambiance and Future Plans
The restaurant’s lounge-like ambiance, combined with exquisitely presented dishes, makes for a winning combination.
Looking ahead, the duo has set their sights on Chile and Miami, aiming to introduce Chifa cuisine to a wider audience.
